Wilmington, DE (Aug. 2, 2021)
Wilmington Mayor Michael Purzycki and County Executive Matt Meyer joined Kuumba Academy students, representatives from ShopRites of Delaware, Dole Packaged Foods, and the Captain Planet Foundation to install a Project Learning Garden at the school. The school was awarded the garden grant through a partnership between Dole and ShopRite.
The Project Learning Garden program provides a context for multidisciplinary learning, ranging from nutrition and science to social studies, math and language arts. Students benefit by expanding their palates, taste-testing healthy foods, and learning about food origins; engaging in authentic science field investigations; manipulating the environment to understand math in real-life applications; recreating historical activities, and writing across all these disciplines.
“Here at Dole, we understand the importance of teaching children the benefits of incorporating fruits and vegetables into their diet, whether they are enjoying fresh produce from their learning garden, or a healthy Dole snack,” said Matt Ingram, Senior Sales Director, Dole Packaged Foods. “By partnering with the Captain Planet Foundation and ShopRite, we are helping more students learn about and develop healthy habits.”
“Anything can be taught in the context of the garden, and hands-on learning supports student understanding of natural systems, food origins, and healthy eating,” explained Leesa Carter, President & CEO, Captain Planet Foundation. “Captain Planet Foundation is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards, and ensuring they are armed with an understanding of the natural world in which they live. We are thrilled to be working with ShopRite and Dole to provide Kuumba Academy with a CPF Learning Garden!”
"We are proud to partner with Dole to provide this Project Learning Garden to Kuumba Academy,” said Ben Simons, Director of Sales & Marketing, Kenny Family ShopRites of Delaware. "At ShopRite we are always looking for ways to give back to the communities where our stores operate. This garden is a great example of how we can partner together to teach children about nutrition and the importance of eating fresh fruits and vegetables.”
“The garden provides students and teachers a chance to take their learning out of the classroom,” said Kuumba Academy Principal Ayanna Johnson. “It provides a valuable opportunity for them to put into practice the lessons being taught in the classroom. By working with members of our learning community, we will continue to provide new and exciting learning experiences for our students.”
