ShopRite Donates 38,000 Bottles of Water

March 11, 2016
A ShopRite tractor-trailer loaded with 38,300 bottles of water arrived at the JFK Recreation Center in Newark  Friday, March 11.

ShopRite answered Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka’s call for donations of bottled water for Newark schools when a tractor-trailer loaded with nearly 1,600 cases of water arrived at JFK Recreation Center, one of several water distribution centers set up around the city.

Thirty Newark public schools recently tested positive for elevated lead levels in drinking water – a problem likely caused by aging pipes and infrastructure in school buildings.  Schools are temporarily using bottled water for cooking and drinking and have turned off drinking fountains.  The city has also begun offering free lead testing to children in the school system.

"We are part of this community and we wanted to help," said Neil Greenstein, the owner and operator of the ShopRite of Newark who organized the recent water delivery.
