According to Feeding America, more than thirty-seven million Americans experience food insecurity each year.  More than sixteen million of them are children…

East Haven, CT (July 13, 2015) – ShopRite presented a check in the amount of $171,459 to Connecticut Food Bank today, Thursday, June 9th, at its East Haven location on Dixwell Avenue. This record-breaking donation was raised as a part ShopRite’s annual participation in the Check-Out Hunger national fundraising campaign.
Each year, ShopRite stores compete to raise funds for this worthy cause and the donations benefit local food banks in ShopRite communities across its trading areas. The top five winning stores for this year’s contest are all located in Connecticut and are owned by Milford Markets, a family business operated by the Garafalo family of Milford, Connecticut.

In a tireless effort to combat these statistics and end hunger in our time, ShopRite associates and loyal customers across CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE and Maryland together raised a record-breaking total of $685,193 in the 2014 annual contest.

“We are very proud of our associates and so grateful to our customers for this year’s most generous contributions to help feed the hungry,” said Harry Garafalo, president of Milford Markets and member of the Board of Directors of Connecticut Food Bank. “My family and I have been working closely with Connecticut Food Bank for many years, supporting them in their mission to provide food to our neighbors in need. We are honored that our stores have played such an integral part in this year’s Check-Out Hunger event.”
Connecticut ShopRite stores in East Haven, Hamden, West Haven and Milford stores, owned and operated by the Garafalo family, were the top five fundraising stores nationally, raising nearly $110,000.

“ShopRite’s commitment to community is once again on display with The Check Out Hunger Campaign,” said Connecticut Food Bank President and CEO, Rob Levine. “The fact that here in Connecticut, Harry Garafalo and his team led their customers to the highest fundraising total in the nation speaks volumes about both ShopRite and its customers.  The people served by the Connecticut Food Bank are fortunate to be the beneficiaries of such passionate community leadership and support.”

Check-Out Hunger, a national fundraising campaign, donates 100 percent of all funds raised to local hunger-fighting charities and raised more than $880,000 this year in support of Feeding America network food banks. From October through December, ShopRite shoppers added a $1, $3, or $5 donation to their bill at the checkout aisle, helping to raise funds for food banks in ShopRite’s trading areas across six states. Year after year, ShopRite associates work tirelessly at checkout lanes to ensure that Check-Out Hunger contributions continue to be a major source of funding for local food banks.
